Samsung launches 5G integrated mobile chip

Samsung Electronics announced that its 5G integrated mobile processor Exynos 980.Exynos 980 is based on 8nm FinFET process technology and is Samsung's first artificial intelligence (AI) mobile processor with integrated 5G modem, instead of a separate 5G coupling. According to the company, the modem has Helps reduce power consumption and increase the space efficiency of the device.

Samsung said the new mobile processor's modem supports 5G to 2G networks, providing fast gigabit downlink rates in 4G LTE and up to 2.55Gbps in 5G below 6GHz. The modem also supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC), which combines 2CC LTE and 5G connectivity to maximize mobile downlink speeds up to 3.55Gbps. In addition, the processor supports the new Wi-Fi 6 standard IEEE 802.11ax.

The company claims that the Exynos 980 includes two of the latest high-performance Cortex-A77 CPU cores and six high-efficiency Cortex-A55 cores to deliver the fast and complex computing power required in the 5G era. The processor is also equipped with a Mali-G76 GPU.

Overall, the Exynos Modem 5100 launched by Samsung last year pioneered the fifth generation of mobile communications. The first 5G integrated mobile processor Exynos980 will also promote the popularity of 5G. According to the company, the Exynos 980 is expected to begin mass production by the end of 2019.
