Supply chain urgent orders, Q2 wafer foundry output increases by 9.6% quarter on quarter to $32 billion

According to market research firm TrendForce, the output value of the top ten wafer foundries increased by 9.6% to $32 billion in the second quarter.

TrendForce pointed out that the output value of the foundry in the second quarter increased on a month on month basis, mainly because of the arrival of the consumption season in the middle of 618 in Chinese Mainland and the return of consumer terminal inventory to a healthy level, customers have started to stock up or replenish the inventory of consumer parts, which has promoted the foundry to receive urgent orders and significantly improved the capacity utilization. Meanwhile, there is a strong demand for artificial intelligence (AI) servers.

In terms of ranking, the order of the top five wafer foundries remains unchanged, namely TSMC, Samsung, SMIC UMC、Global Foundries。 The sixth to tenth places are Huahong Group Tower Semiconductor、 World Advanced, PSMC, Hefei Nexchip. Among them, the world's advanced DDI (display driver chip) urgent orders and PMIC (power management chip) dividends have driven shipment growth, and the ranking has risen to eighth place.

TrendForce pointed out that the third quarter has entered the traditional stocking season. Despite the uncertain global economic situation suppressing consumer confidence, the release of new smartphones and PC/NB (laptop) products in the second half of the year can still to some extent drive the demand for SoC and peripheral ICs; In addition, with the rapid growth of HPC (high-performance computing) related to AI servers, it is expected that the demand will continue until the end of the year, and even some advanced process orders have been extended to the whole year of 2025, becoming a key driving force to support the growth of output value in 2024.

TrendForce expects that due to the improved utilization of advanced and mature process capacity in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, the output value of the top ten global wafer foundries is expected to further increase, and the quarterly growth rate is expected to be the same as the second quarter.
