MediaTek Huang Heqi: Sub-6GHz 5G terminal products come out first

As 3GPP continues to set 5G related technical specifications, a new revolution in 5G technology will be officially launched around the world. Taiwan is a global semiconductor and capital communication component development center. From chip design, manufacturing, and module terminals, it has a complete industrial chain, and is expected to drive a new wave of industrial upgrading opportunities through 5G applications. MediaTek is also optimistic about this trend and will take the lead in attacking the terminal chip market in the Sub-6GHz band.

Huang Heqi, general manager of MediaTek's communication system design department, said that 5G will be traded around the world, and related technology and service applications need to cooperate with mature and complete ecosystems, rather than one company can lead. In response to this trend, MediaTek is committed to participating in 3GPP international standards conference discussions and terminal chip development, and is committed to providing customers with solutions to achieve the goal of 5G business transfer in 2020.

Huang Heqi believes that while traditional infrastructure builders have built large-scale base stations, they have also built some high-tech walls. Small cell stations (Small Cell) will face higher thresholds if they are linked to the core network; There are still doubts about the operability. In addition, the general exclusion of the base station near the home will also make it difficult to find a small base station. Therefore, despite the small base station initiative for many years, the business model is still unclear.

On the other hand, the Sub-6 GHz band features a long transmission distance and a wide coverage of the honeycomb, so the use of the Sub-6 GHz band requires less base stations than the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. At the same time, the technology used in the Sub-6GHz band can follow the technology developed in the 4G period, so the industrial chain of the RF component related to the Sub-6GHz band is relatively mature.

However, because the 5G terminal market is very diverse, although MediaTek will prioritize the Sub-6GHz band, it will continue to develop continuously in the millimeter wave band. At the same time, because the terminal chip is the most familiar market for MediaTek, in the face of the 5G revolution, MediaTek will continue to invest in this direction.

At present, MediaTek's R&D strength in 5G technology has also been highly recognized by the International Organization for Standardization. According to the research report of IPlytics GmbH, the German market research unit, among the top 20 companies that have submitted 3GPP 5G standard technology contributions, the participation of MediaTek's 5G proposal has increased by nearly four times compared with the 4G standard formulation period, and MediaTek With 43% of the 5G proposals, the approval rate is the third highest in the world.

Huang Heqi, general manager of MediaTek's communications system design department, said that 5G technology and service applications require a mature and complete ecosystem to work together, rather than a company can dominate.
